In the wilderness lies the preservation of the world.
Henry David Thoreau
Day 4 – July 13, 2017 The mountains are calling
The sun returns the next morning: it’s bright and brilliant sunshine as we crawl out of our tents. TexEnergy’s solar panel is really working well. We load our camera batteries because today we want to take our first long hike: climb the majestic mountain at Duo Lakes.
On the way to the other side of the lake, Daniel, Rayna and Kai show us animal tracks, lichen and mosses. Slowly we are getting the feel of the wilderness, the environment in which we will live for three weeks.
We start up the mountain but about three quarters of the way up we have to stop because the path becomes too steep and unwieldy. We go back down, roped together for security, and Milam picks us up by boat and paddles across the river. At twilight a huge beaver works on a dam that separates the upper lake from the lower lake.
