In the wilderness lies the preservation of the world.
Henry David Thoreau
So long wilderness
Unfortunately for us, it is our last day in the wilderness on the Elk River. In the early morning, greeted by the sun, we wash ourselves in the river and prepare our breakfast at the campfire. There are pancakes and eggs with potatoes and bacon – delicious. Then we start to pack the tents and clean them up. Shortly afterwards we arrive at the canoe and paddle along the river, back into the lake towards Strathcona Park Lodge. We face rather strong headwinds so we are not as fast as on the outward journey, but the weather is much sunnier. We even make a short stopover to jump in the water. In the end, however, we are back in civilization far too quickly. But we are infinitely grateful to have had this experience in the wilderness.
