The Gwich’in First Nations were looking for partners for a vitally important project for the Gwich'in people: The conservation of the Peel River Watershed that straddles the borders on the Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories in northern Canada. Wilderness International has taken this challenge on, and since 2006 has worked together with the Tetl’it Gwich’in First Nations on the following projects:
- May 2007: Conservation excursion to Germany by Gwich’in students, taking part in the “Take a Walk for the Wild” runs, and helping to produce the “Saving the Three Rivers Watershed“ documentary film.
- July/August 2007: Wilderness International team visit to the conservation area.
- July/August 2008: Student Conservation Expedition to the Peel River Watershed, paddling the Snake River and visiting Fort McPherson and Whitehorse.
- December 2008 to July 2009: Production of the internet short documentary film filmed by the students in Canada entitled “Breath Wilderness”. Presentations within Germany, and petitions for conservation to parliament.
- 2009 and January to April 2010: production of the film "Three Rivers Youth Conservation Expedition“ to show the experiences of 15 Gwich‘in and German students who traveled the region to speak up for conservation.
